Setting Some Goals

Well, I turn 31 next Saturday, and I have decided to share my goals for the next 6 months of my life. I hope that by doing so, it will encourage me to stay faithful to them, and that by writing them it will allow me to be realistic with them...not to set them to high, nor to low.

Goal #1: Be able to jog my 3 mile circut in it's entirety.
I live on a 1 mile circle with two WICKED-LARGE hills. Those, added to a two mile stretch of pavement make up my current 3 mile walk/jog. Right now, I can jog approximately 1/2 the circle, I walk 1 mile, then jog the remaining 1 mile home, equaling 3 miles. I want to do this for 2 reasons: #1: for my health. #2: this is my alone time with the Lord, and by setting a goal, I will work on it weekly. I need that time, and I love it!

Goal #2: To adhere to my weight watchers points, both daily and weekly.
About 2 years ago, I began weight watchers online and followed it faithfully. 6 months later, I weighed about 30 lbs less, felt great, and wasn't scared to go shopping anymore. I took a break that Christmas and never went back. Now, I am only 10 lbs away from where I started...not cool. So, beginning on Saturday, June 10, I will once again begin tracking my points and weight online. I will stick with it for 6 months!

Goal #3: To organize my quilting space, my basement storage, and my office space at home in a manner that WORKS FOR ME!
I will call upon my great friend kw to help, and will seek advice from Organizing from the Inside Out. I give myself 6 months to make improvement.

Goal #4: I will finish the following projects:
1. My Jasmine wall hanging quilt I began 1 year ago. The first quilt I started that was for me, and not a friend or baby :o)!
2. The curtains for my living room.

I will post my progress in each area once a month.

I can do this. Thank you, Lord, for your provision. Thank you, that you are my provider. I praise you Lord that in you I lack for nothing, and that You will be my strength and my redeemer, my glory and the lifter of my head, my high tower and my refuge, my strength and my cornerstone.

A Fun Twist on a Signature Quilt!

Hi, my name is Mandy, and I am a quiltaholic!! AND I LOVE using vintage fabric!

Again, I am working on a quilt for my friend Jamie...yes, she is getting another one (see flip flop quilt), but she is moving to New Jersey in June so that means she gets a signature quilt! For those not familiar - a signature quilt is one that leaves blank areas open on the top or back of the quilt. Typically, at a farewell party or gathering, the quilt is placed in a common area with a variety of permanent fabric markers, and throughout the event, those in attendance are asked to take a few minutes to sign their names and add their thoughts/prayers/support for the recipient. Many simple designs are out there to create signature quilts, and many are very easy. Add to that the fact that no two will ever be the same, and you have a unique gift that will be cherished forever!

Jamie's quilt wasn't ready for the party, so I precut the white fabric and had everyone sign the scraps. Then, I invited Jamie over to raid my stash, letting her pick out the fabrics for her signature quilt. Well, because she is a great gal pal, I let her dig through my collection of 60'z and 70'z fabric left to me by my Gramma Pauline (a quilter).

After about 5 minutes, Jamie surfaces with some super-cool pink, gold, and green flowered fabric ~ an unfinished dress intended for my mother while she was in high school (pictured center, below). Jamie fell in LOVE with it, so the next evening we took a field trip to the fabric store and matched the remaining 5 fabrics needed. Luckily, the shop had a dyno-sale, so she got all the fabric, backing, and batting for less than $20!!

Here is what we came up with....

It is hard to see, but there is some dark green on the left. The pink "cloudy" fabric is flannel, and will be used for the back.

Because the pattern was quick and easy, I am reusing my "Comfort of Psalms" pattern, replacing the Psalms panels with the signature panels that were signed at the party.

This quilt will be so different from the other one, I will post it when it is done so that you can compare.

Isn't that vintage fabric cool?!?!

Flip Flop Quilt

I made this quilt for my good friend Jamie. She is a tried and true beach bum, so when I saw this pattern in one of my quilting magazines, I HAD to make it for her. It was as much fun to make as it is to look at!

The pattern is by Cedar Creek Quilts, and I only paid $8 for it. The quilt is VERY simple to do, and doesn't use much fabric.

I used steam-a-seam lite and machine applique to secure the flip flops, but you could do an old fashioned hand applique if you wished.

Each pair of flops is a bright and fun fabric, with ribbon for the straps and buttons, beads, and charms for the toe embellishments. I free motion quilted around the flops on the sand. Jamie LOVED this quilt, and I have gotten more comments about this one than many others...everyone wants to know where the pattern came from!

This one is intended to be a wall-hanging. You could make it larger for a bed quilt or throw, but it isn't washing machine friendly due to the ribbons and embellishments, so I wouldn't recommend it!

I hope to give a step-by-step machine applique demo sometime next month, for my friends who don't quite know how.

Hang Ten, Ya'll!
